Mauritania’s fishing harbours

While most of Mauritania’s territory is desert, its coastal waters are among the richest in the world. The fishing industry makes up for a significant part of the country’s economy and employs tens of thousands of people. The recent surge in foreign investment, with China in the lead, has attracted bitter criticism for damaging the ecosystem and being of little benefit to local fishing communities.
